In this video, I had the privilege of interviewing Tom Bannard, the Assistant Director for Recovery Support at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). We discussed the layers of support and resources available for students in recovery, and he shared essential tips for families exploring colleges with recovery programs.

Highlights:

  1. Importance of Reaching Out: Tom emphasizes the importance of parents and students reaching out to colleges and universities to understand the resources available before choosing a college. Ensuring the school can provide the support needed for your student's recovery journey is crucial.

  2. VCU's Extensive Recovery Program: VCU boasts one of the largest recovery programs in the country. Tom provides an overview of the comprehensive support services available, including peer support, counseling, and recovery-focused events.

  3. Finding Other Colleges with Strong Recovery Programs: The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is an excellent resource for identifying colleges with robust recovery programs. See the direct link below. Remember, each program varies, so it's important to talk to someone at the school to understand what they offer.

  4. Accommodations at VCU: VCU provides several accommodations for students in recovery, such as additional test time and incomplete grades. These accommodations require documentation from an outside provider or can be arranged through Rams in Recovery.

Don't miss this insightful discussion! This video is a must-watch if you or your loved one is considering college options while in recovery. 🎓💪

As always, I look forward to your conversations with your students, teens, and young adults. Let's make this journey joyful and transformative for them!
