School Counseling Ratios and Lack of Time
The average ratio of counselors to students throughout the US is 408 students to 1 counselor. The average public school student receives only 38 minutes of personal college counseling over 4 years. Just 4 in 10 students reported that they received any college counseling advising at all. Counselors are pulled in many directions, and college advising is only one item on their long to-do list. On average, public school counselors spent 19 percent of their time on postsecondary counseling in 2018–19.
